Aquamarine and diamond ring, circa 1950. Claw-set with an oval aquamarine weighing approximately 6 carats, the shoulders of teardrop design set with brilliant-cut diamonds. Aquamarine is a pale blue variety of beryl, the family of stones that includes emerald, as well as the lesser known heliodor (yellow) and morganite (pink). Aquamarine is prized for the subtlety of its colour and the clarity and purity of its crystals, which can grow to be exceptionally large. Due to its natural similarity to water, aquamarine has long been associated with the sea, and was thought to act as a protective talisman to any seafarer who wore one.
